Gase was born on March 29, 1978, in Ypsilanti, Michigan. He started his coaching career in Michigan State while as an undergraduate student at Michigan State. Gase worked as an assistant to the coaching staff. After he graduated from Michigan State, he worked as a defensive graduate assistant for LSU in 2000. He worked with the recruiting team.
Gase left the LSU and became a scouting assistant for the Detroit Lions. He worked as a scouting assistant for two years. In 2006, he was promoted to the team’s offensive quality control coach, and a year later he was promoted to the team’s quarterbacks coach.
In 2008, Gase left Detroit Lions to join the San Francisco 49ers as an assistant coach. A year later, he joined the Denver Broncos as the offensive coordinator. He stayed with Broncos until the 2014 season. In 2015, Gase went on to become the Chicago Bear’s offensive coordinator. In Gase’s only season as the Bears offensive coordinator, he led his team finished 18th in total offense, recording 5,514 total net yards and 344.6 per game.
On January 9, 2016, Gase became the head coach of the Miami Dolphins. Under his coaching, the Dolphins started the season with 1-4 record but would follow that up with a six-game winning streak. He finished his first season with a 10-6 record leading Miami to the playoffs for the first time since 2008. Miami finished second in the AFC East. In 2018, Gase was fired by Dolphins as part of their organizational changes. He finished his record 23-25 as Miami’s head coach.
On January 11, 2019, Gase was hired as the head coach of the New York Jets.
Regarding his personal life, Gase is married to Jennifer Vitt. She is the daughter of New York Jets linebackers coach Joe Vitt. Adam and Jennifer together have three children; a daughter named McKenzie and two sons named A.J. and Wyatt.
