Avery Brooks Early Life
Avery Brooks was born in Evansville, Indiana, the son of choral conductor and music educator Eva Lydia and tool and die craftsman Samuel Brooks.
Samuel Travis Crawford, his maternal grandpa, was also a vocalist who graduated from Tougaloo College in 1901. Avery’s family relocated to Gary, Indiana, when he was eight years old, when his father was laid off from International Harvester.
Brooks studied at both Indiana University and Oberlin College. In 1976, he received his bachelor of arts as well as his master of fine arts from Rutgers University, making him the first African American to get an MFA in acting and directing from the university.
