Harman was born on January 19, 1987, in Savannah, Georgia. He played his collegiate golf at the University of Georgia where he was a three-time 2nd Team All-American. In 2005, he won the NCAA preview and then Isleworth Invitational a year later.
As an amateur, he won the U.S. Junior Amateur award in 2003. In 2005, he won the Players Amateur and also played on the winning side of the 2009 Walker Cup and 2007 Palmer Cup teams.

Harman also competed in the 2017 U.S. Open. He entered the final round one stroke clear of three players, at 12 under par. He finished in a tie for second place with Hideki Matsuyama, four strokes behind winner Brooks Koepka.
Regarding his personal life, Brian is married to Kelly Van Slyke. Together, they have one child named Cooper Marie. Harman and his family reside in Sea Island, Georgia.
