Arians was born on October 3, 1952, in Paterson, New Jersey. He graduated from William High School in Pennsylvania. He then played his college football at Virginia Tech. As a senior in 1974 for the Hokies football team, he completed 53 of 118 passing attempts for 952 yards with three passing touchdowns and seven interceptions. He held the Virginia Tech school record for most QB rushing touchdowns in a season with 11.
Arians coaching career started in 1975 as a graduate assistant at Virginia Tech. He then held an assistant coaching position at Mississippi State University for almost two years. From 1981 to 1982, he coached at the University of Alabama. In 1983, Arians coached Temple University for almost five years.
His NFL coaching career started in 1988 after he was hired as a running backs coach for the Kansas City Chiefs. He coached for the Chiefs for almost three years before he went to Mississippi State as an offensive coordinator.
In 1996, he was hired as a Tight ends coach for the New Orleans Saint. In 2003, he was hired as the Steelers wide receivers coach. Four years late, he was promoted to offensive coordinator. He then went on to win Super Bowl XLIII. The same year, he was named the 2012 AP Coach of the year making him the first interim head coach to win the award.
Arians then joined the Arizona Cardinals as their head coach agreeing on a four-year deal. He finished his first season with a record of 10-6. Arians and his team finished the 2014 season with an 11-5 record. E was named AP head coach of the year for the second time in three years. In his 2017 season, Arians led the Cardinals to an 8-8 record. He announced his retirement from coaching after five seasons with the Cardinals.
On January 8, 2019, Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed Arians on a four-year contract to come out of retirement and become the head coach of the team. He assembled the largest coaching staff in the NFL for the 2019 season with a total of 28 assistants.
Regarding his personal life, Bruce is married to Christina Arians. Together they have a son named Jake and a daughter named Kristi Anne. Arians and his wife run a charity called The Arians Family Foundation. It supports to prevent and remedy the abuse and neglect of children.
