Heyward was born on May 6, 1989, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He went to Peachtree Ridge High School where he played football for the Peachtree Ridge Lions football team. In his school career, he recorded over 100 tackles and 16 sacks as a senior. He was rated 13th best defensive tackle in the nation by Scout.com.
Career
Heyward decided to play college football for the Ohio State. As a freshman in 2007, he led Ohio State Buckeyes to the BCS National Championships final. As a sophomore, he recorded 36 tackles and three sacks. In 2009, as a junior, he recorded 10 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks leading his team to the Rose Bowl. Heyward finished his career at Ohio State with a total of 162 tackles, 31 tackles for loss, 15 sacks, and one interception.
In 2011, the Pittsburgh Steelers selected Heyward in the first round of the NFL Draft. He signed a four-year, $6.70 million contract that included $5.41 million guaranteed and a signing bonus of $3.37 million. He made his professional debut in the season-opener against the Baltimore Ravens where he made one solo tackle.
