Quinn was born on September 11, 1970, in Morristown, New Jersey. He went to Morristown High School where he started playing football. After graduating from the school in 1989, he went to Salisbury State University and played on its football team as a defensive lineman for three years. He was also a four-year starter in football and track & field.
During his school time, Dan has been a football team captain twice and also captained the track & field team in 1994. He was inducted in the Salisbury University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2005.
Quinn started his coaching career with the William & Mary Tribe football team in 1994. A year later, he coached Virginia Military Institute working with their defensive lines.
His coaching career in NFL started in San Francisco as their defensive quality control in 2001. From 2003 to 2009, he coached defensive lines for the teams like San Francisco 49ers, the Miami Dolphins, and the New York Jets. After that, he joined the Seattle Seahawks but also served as the defensive coordinator for the Florida Gators in the 2011 and 2012 campaigns.
In 2015, Quinn became the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons. He won his first game as the head coach of the Falcons by beating Philadelphia Eagles with a score of 26-24. Under his coaching, the Falcons had a bright start but missed out on playoffs.
In 2016, his team finished the year with an 11-5 record good enough to win the NFC South and clinch a first-round bye in the playoffs. A year later, Falcons won the NFC championship against the Green Bay Packers and set up a Super Bowl LI against the New England Patriots. In that game, the Falcons blew the largest lead in Super Bowl History and lost the game in overtime by the score of 34-28.
