Brooks was born in Toronto, Ontario, where his father was pursuing his doctorate at the University of Toronto.
Brooks grew up in New York City’s middle-class Stuyvesant Town housing development with his brother, Daniel. His father was an English literature professor at New York University, and his mother was a nineteenth-century British history student at Columbia. Brooks was raised Jewish, but he rarely goes to synagogue.
Brooks attended Grace Church School, an independent Episcopal primary school in the East Village, as a child. His family relocated to the Philadelphia Main Line, the city’s affluent suburbs, when he was 12 years old.
In 1979, he graduated from Radnor High School. Brooks earned a history degree from the University of Chicago in 1983.
