Marrone was born on July 25, 1964, in Bronx, New York. He went to Bronx Herbert H. Lehman High School where he started playing football. He then played college football at Syracuse University from 1983 to 1985 on the offensive line. Marrone was drafted in the 6th round of the 1986 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Raiders.
As a player, Marrone spent time in camp with NFL teams like New Orleans Saints, Miami Dolphins, Pittsburgh Steelers, Dallas Cowboys, and Minnesota Vikings. He ended his career in 1992 with the London Monarchs of the World League of American Football. He helped Monarchs to win the World Bowl in 1991.
Marrone started his coaching career by becoming a tight ends coach at the Cortland State in 1992. He then became an offensive line coach for Coast Guard, Northeastern, Georgia Tech, Tennessee, New York Jets, and New Orleans Saints.
On December 11, 2008, he was hired as Syracuse University’s head football coach. In his first season, the Syracuse Orange finished with four wins. He led the team to the Orange Bowl win in 2011. After that, he was hired as a head coach of the Buffalo Bills. He stayed with the Bills for two years and his overall record during two seasons was 15-17.
On January 20, 2015, Marrone was hired as assistant head coach and offensive line coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was then named the interim head coach of the Jaguars almost two years later. On January 9, 2017, the Jaguars announced him as the head coach removing the title of interim. In his first season as the head coach, he led the Jaguars to win the AFC South division championship making them playoffs for the first time since 2007 season.
On February 23, 2018, the Jaguars extended his contract through 2021. Marrone holds the record of 37-45 in his NFL career as a head coach.
