D.R.A.M. was born on August 3, 1988 in Neustadt a der Weinstraße, Germany as Shelley Marshaun Massenburg-Smith. Growing up, he was prone to traveling around because he was raised by a military mother, Gwen Jones. He was raised in Hampton, Virginia.
