Drew Pearson attended college and played football. Drew began his football career at South River High School, where he also attended school. In addition to baseball and basketball, he lettered in both and graduated in 1969. He continued his education at the University of Tulsa, where he earned a football scholarship. He took over as starting quarterback from Joe Theismann as a junior. As a senior, he led a run-oriented offense with 33 receptions for 690 yards and five touchdowns. During his collegiate career, he had 55 catches for 1,119 yards, eight touchdowns, and a 20.3 yard average per reception.

He took over for Otto Stowe as a rookie when Stowe fractured his ankle against the Philadelphia Eagles in the seventh game of the season, and his backup Mike Montgomery was injured the next game.
In 1974, Stowe sought a move, and Pearson took over as the full-time starting against Golden Richards.

He led the squad with 62 catches for 1,087 yards and two scores. He would remain the club’s leading receiver until 1978, when Tony Hill took over as the starting wide receiver.

In 1983, he surpassed Hayes as the club leader in receiving yards. In March 1984, he fell asleep at the wheel of his Dodge Daytona, driving into a parked tractor-trailer.

He played an important role in the Cowboys’ three Super Bowl appearances, including a victory in Super Bowl XII in 1978. He also scored a touchdown in Super Bowl X. Pearson was dubbed “Mr. Clutch” after many game-winning catches, including a Hail Mary reception from Roger Staubach in a 1975 playoff game, which is regarded as one of the most famous plays in NFL history.

He went on to become one of the best wide receivers in NFL history, with 489 receptions for 7,822 yards, 189 running yards, 155 yards returning kickoffs, and 50 touchdowns. He was selected to the NFL’s All-Decade Team in the 1970s and is regarded as one of the top 20 Pro Football All-Time wide receivers.

He was named All-Pro three times (1974, 1976-77), All-NFC in 1975, and Second Team All-NFC in 1978. He also made the Pro Bowl in 1974, 1976, and 1977. Football Digest named him NFL receiver of the year in 1977. In 1976, he led the National Football Conference with 58 pass catches (NFC). He was the Cowboys’ offensive captain in 1977, 1978, 1982, and 1983.

Drew is listed #10 on the NFL Network show “NFL’s Top 10” in the episode titled “Greatest Dallas Cowboys” from 2009, but Drew was removed off the list in 2016 and replaced with Randy White at #10.

On August 19, 2011, Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys, was inducted into the Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor. Pearson, Charles Haley, and Larry Allen were inducted during the Cowboys-Seahawks game on November 6, 2011. As of 2021, Drew Pearson has an estimated net worth of $15 million.
