Early Life
Smith was born on June 14, 1995, in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He went to Bishop Luers High School where he was a letterman in football, basketball, and track. During his time in high school, he won the Butkus Award as a senior which is given to the best high school linebacker in the country. He was also named Mr. Football award winner in the Indiana state.
College and Professional Career
Smith was considered as the best outside linebacker by Rivals.com and scout.com. He committed to play football at the University of Notre Dame. In 2013, he started all 13 games where he recorded 67 tackles, one forced fumble, three pass break-ups and one interception.
In 2015, as a junior, he played in all 13 games with 115 tackles, nine tackles for loss, one sack, five passes defended, and one forced fumble. He won the Butkus award given to the college top linebacker.
In 2016, the Dallas Cowboys selected him in the second round of the NFL Draft. He signed to a four-year, $6.49 million contract which included $4.42 million guaranteed and a signing bonus of $2.92 million. Unfortunately, he was inactive for the entire 2016 NFL season from his torn ACL and MCL.
In the 2017 season, Smith made his debut for the Cowboys’ against the New York Giants and recorded seven combined tackles. He finished that season with 81 combined tackles, two pass deflections, two forced fumbles, and one sack in a total of 16 games.
On August 20, 2019, Smith signed a five-year contract extension with the Cowboys worth $64 million with $35.5 million guaranteed. He is under contract with the Cowboys till the 2024 season.
