Jimmy Yang Early Life & Education
During British rule in Hong Kong, Yang was born Au-yeung Man-Sing. His parents were both born in Shanghai and later relocated to Hong Kong. Yang’s family immigrated to the United States in 2000, when he was thirteen years old, and settled in Los Angeles, California.
Jimmy Yang’s aunt and grandmother had already moved to the United States, and his parents joined them primarily to provide Yang and his brother, Roy, with better schools and education. When he arrived, he enrolled in the eighth grade at John Burroughs Middle School. He went on to attend Beverly Hills High School.
Yang earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of California, San Diego in 2009. Mike Judge, a future Silicon Valley showrunner and fellow UCSD alumnus, delivered the commencement address at his college graduation.

When he returned to Los Angeles, he signed up for Central Casting, which had a low barrier to entry, as well as other casting websites. When a friend told him that there was money to be made in residual checks from commercials, he was inspired to consider acting. In the meantime, he performed stand-up routines throughout Southern California and enrolled in acting classes. Yang was eventually cast as an actor by Vesta Talent Agency.
Jimmy Yang made his television debut in 2012 on CBS’s 2 Broke Girls and his first late-night stand-up appearance in 2014 on The Arsenio Hall Show.
