Kardea was born in Charleston, South Carolina. She is of Gullah/Geechee descent, an African-Americans who live in the coastal areas of the United States of Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina. Kardea got a passion for cooking came from her grandmother’s where she learned to make traditional/classic dishes from the Gullah/Geechee people.
Initially, Kardea viewed cooking as a hobby. Becoming a chef was never in her mind. In fact, she studied psychology at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta and worked in social services for many years. In 2013, she moved to New Jersey to continue her education in psychology. Two years later, she left her job in social services and started cooking in front of the camera.
Kardea on her first cooking impressed Food Network executives after her boyfriend signed her up to audition for a pilot, however, the network wanted her to brush off her cooking skills. She then moved to South Carolina to start the New Gullah Supper Club where the menus deliver dishes her grandmother and mother passed down to her.
Since then, Kardea has appeared on several Food Network shows like “Farmhouse Rules”, “BBQ Blitz”, “Chopped Junior”, “Beach Bites”, “Beat Bobby Flay”, “Cooks vs. Cons”. And “Family Food Showdown”. She has also been given her own show “Delicious Ms. Brown” where she introduces the dishes of her Gullah origins to her viewers. According to Brown, “she not only wants to show people of color but also to show a part of the world you don’t hear about which is Gullah/Geechee people”.
