Rhule was born on January 31, 1975, in New York. His family moved to Pennsylvania when he was a teenager. He went to State College where he played football as a linebacker. He then played his college football at Penn State under Joe Paterno. Rhule was a three-time Penn State Scholar-Athlete and an Academic All-Big Ten honoree in 1997. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. He also has a Master’s degree in Educational Psychology from the University of Buffalo.
Rhule’s coaching career started in 1998 as the linebackers coach for Albright College. He then worked as a defensive line coach for Buffalo, UCLA, and Western Carolina. In 2006, he was hired as defensive line coach at Temple University. In 2007, he switched to quarterback coach, and a year later he was named Temple’s offensive coordinator.
Rhule was named the head football coach at Temple University in 2012. In July 2015, he signed a four-year extension with Temple which would extend his contract through the 2021 season. In his third year as Temple’s head coach, his team won the American’s East Division and took part in the conference’s inaugural championship game.
Rhule then became the head coach at Baylor University in 2016. In 2017, Baylor finished the season with a 1-11 record which meant Baylor would not qualify for the bowl for the first time since 2009. In 2019, Baylor Bears finished the season at 11-1 but fell to Oklahoma in the Big 12 Championship game and Georgia in the Sugar Bowl.
Regarding his NFL career, he joined Tom Coughlin’s New York Giants in 2012 as the offensive line coach. On January 7, 2020, he was hired to become the fifth head coach of the Carolina Panthers.
Regarding his personal life, Matt is married to Julie Rhule. Together they have two children named Bryant Rhule and Vivienne Rhule.
