Garrett was born on December 29, 1995, in Arlington, Texas. He went to Martin High School where he was a letterman in football, basketball, and track. He was rated as a five-star recruit by Rivals.com and was ranked as the second-best player in his class.
Regarding his family, he was born to Lawrence Garrett and Audrey Garrett. His half-brother, Sean Williams, is a professional basketball player. He played for Boston College and was selected in the first round of the 2007 NBA draft by the New Jersey Nets. His older sister, Brea Garrett, was a track and field athlete at Texas A&M.

Garett decided to play college football at Texas A & M University. He was signed by Texas A & M as the highest-rated defensive player they had ever signed. As a freshman in 2014, he broke Texas A&M’s freshman sack record of 5.5 in just six games. He finished his freshman season with 11.5 sacks, 53 tackles, 10 quarterback hurries, and a blocked kick. He was a consensus Freshman All-American and Freshman All-SEC selection.
In his sophomore year, Garett recorded 57 total tackles, 18.5 tackles for loss, seven quarterback hurries, five forced fumbles, and a blocked punt. His stellar performance earned him a first-team All-American selection and Bill Willis Award as a top defensive lineman.
His junior season was marred by injuries. But nonetheless, he finished that year recording 8.5 sacks, 32 total tackles, 10 quarterback hurries, two forced fumbles, and a pass breakup. He then decided to enter the 2017 NFL Draft.
Garrett was selected by the Cleveland Browns with the first overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft. He signed a four-year, $30.41 million contract, including a $20.25 million signing bonus and an option for a fifth year. In his rookie season with the Browns, he recorded 28 combined tackles, seven sacks, one pass defended, and one fumble recovery.
Garrett was named a defensive captain for the 2018 season. He ended that season starting all 16 games and recording 13.5 sacks, 44 tackles combined, 29 quarterback hits, three passes defended, and three forced fumbles. He was ranked 49th on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2019.
