Narduwar Early Life

Nardwuar was born John Ruskin in 1968 in Vancouver, British Columbia. Vernon Ruskin, his father, was an engineer, and his mother, Olga Ruskin (née Bruchovsky), was a local journalist, high school history teacher, and historian. She wrote a biography of “Gassy Jack” John Deighton, a Vancouver historical figure. His mother introduced him to local history by taking him to historical society gatherings. Nardwuar was a long distance runner and won a public speaking competition in elementary school.

Nardwuar went to Hillside Secondary School in West Vancouver and was on the student council. He began booking bands for school events and conducted his first interview, with Art Bergmann of Poisoned, through the student council. In 1986, he was accepted to the University of British Columbia (UBC) and changed his name to Nardwuar. While studying history at UBC, Nardwuar wrote papers on Vancouver’s Lions Gate Bridge and the assassination of John F. Kennedy. He earned a bachelor’s degree in history in 1990.

Narduwar Net Worth & Career

Aside from being a singer and songwriter, Narduwar has also been one of the most commercially successful radio personalities, which has helped him earn a lot of money.  During his time at the University of British Columbia in 1986, he met John Collins and Lisa Marr, with whom he formed the garage rock band “The Evaporators.” In the early 1990s, the three were joined by David Carswell and Scott Livingstone and began releasing their own projects. “Welcome to the Castle,” their first single, was released in 1992.

Nardwuar’s band had released three very successful studio albums by the end of the 1990s. He was a rising media star at the time and played an important role in the rock band’s success. By 1995, he had earned more than $150,000 from his two jobs. As the millennium approached, he turned his attention to radio and began interviewing a variety of musicians and public figures. Because of his eccentric and absurd style, the radio sensation was frequently threatened and verbally attacked by a slew of celebrities, including Sebastian Bach, Quiet Riot, Alice Cooper, Lydia Lunch, and Harlan Ellison.

Nardwuar’s success stems from his various occupations and international fame. His work on the radio has been covered extensively by the media and newspapers in both Canada and the United States over the last few years, causing numerous controversies. In the 1990s, some of his most talked-about interviews were with Courtney Love, whom he managed to sneak into her dressing room twice, and with the best-selling band Nirvana. In recent years, some of his most memorable interviews have been with Skrillex, Pharrell Williams, and Drake, in which he used his extensive research to impress, confuse, and scare his guests.

Another factor that increased Nardwuar’s popularity and wealth was a 2004 interview with former Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin. The radio host asked Martin to play a quick cameo titled “Hip Flip” during the interview, which took place in June of that year. Since then, the so-called hip flip game has been one of the most talked-about games, with premiers and prime ministers performing it on occasion during elections. Justin Trudeau, Christy Clark, Andrew Weaver, John Horgan, and, most recently, Jagmeet Singh are among the influential figures who have done so. As of 2021, Nardwuar has a net worth of $20 million.
