Family and Early Life
Macintyre was born on 3rd August 1996 in Oban Scotland. He was brought up by his foster parents. Robert lives by the Glencruitten Golf Club where his father works as a greenkeeper. He developed an interest in the game as a young boy by watching Phil Mickelson as his golfing idol.
Robert, however, spent most of his time playing a sport called Shinty in Scotland. He took playing golf seriously during his senior years in high school. He moved to the United States to join McNeese State University in Louisiana.
Career
Macintyre had a very successful career as an amateur before he turned professional in 2017. He attributes his success in golfing to his passion for Shinty. He says Shinty sharpened his golf skills. In 2013 he won the Scottish Youths Championship and the Scottish Boys Open Stroke Play Championship. He also won the Scottish Amateur in 2015. He represented his country in the 2016 Eisenhower Trophy as well as the Walker Cup in 2017.
Robert turned professional in 2017 and played his first two events in October on the MENA Golf Tour and later won the Sahara Kuwait Championship. He qualified for the final stage of the European Tour on Qualifying School in November 2017. Robert was placed at the 37th place and secured a 2018 Challenge Tour Card. He however lost by one stroke to Kim Koivu in a playoff but he had an extraordinary end to the season.
Macintyre’s amazing performance in the 2018 season placed him 12th in the Challenge Tour Order of Merit and secured him a place on the 2019 European Tour. He became a joint runner-up in the Made in Denmark tournament. In July he tied for the sixth position and gained entry to the Open Championship at Royal Portrush. He was the top Scot on the Official World Golf Ranking for the first time after tying at the fourth at the Italian Open. He was the leading rookie at the Race to Dubai rankings at 11th place. Robert won the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year Award.
