Russell Nelson Early Life After WWI

He was born to a Mormon family in Salt Lake City in the decade following World War I. As a result, his upbringing has been intensely religious and conservative. He defended his traditional environment and upheld his family’s religious and faith traditions. He attended Church Sunday School and was baptized as a member of the LDS church at the age of 16. He attended LDS Business College in addition to high school and earned his B.A. and M.D. from the University of Utah.

Russell served in the United States Army as a Captain in the Army Medical Corps for three years and saw action in the Korean War. He was also part of the team of specialists who performed the world’s first open-heart surgery.

Russell Nelson met fellow Utah student Dantzel White in 1942, and after three years of dating, they married in the Salt Lake Temple in 1945. They had nine daughters and one son. Dantzel died unexpectedly in 2005, and Russell married Wendy L. Watson the following year. She was a nurse and educator from Canada.

Russell Nelson finished the four-year M.D. program at the University of Utah in just three years, ranking first in his class.
