Early Life
Mathieu was born on May 13, 1992, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He attended St. Augustine High School where he played for the St. Augustine Purple Knights high school football team.
Mathieu was mostly raised by his grandparents. His mother was absent the majority of the time and his biological father, Darrin Hayes, has been incarcerated for murder most of his life. In 1997, his grandfather died, and was adopted by his uncle and aunt.
College and Professional Career
After high school, Mathieu attended Louisiana State University where he played for the LSU Tiger football team. As a freshman in 2010, he played in all 13 games with one start finishing the season with 59 tackles, 3 sacks, and 2 interceptions.
In 2011, he was named the most valuable player of the SEC Championship Game. Due to his tenacious ability and ability to play tough football against larger opponents, Mathieu was given the nickname “Honey Badger”. In 2011, he was awarded the Chuck Bednarik Award which is given to the best defensive player in college football.
In 2013, the Arizona Cardinals signed Mathieu in the 3rd round of the NFL Draft. He signed a four-year, $3.05 million contract, including $817,187 guaranteed and a signing bonus of $265,000. His professional debut game with the Cardinals came against the St. Louis Rams. He made seven solo tackles in that match. He was named a first-team All-Pro at the cornerback position by Pro Football Focus after his first season.
