What Happened to Tyron Woodley?

Tyron Woodley was the UFC welterweight title in January 2019, following dominant victories over Darren Till, Demian Maia, Stephen Thompson, and Robbie Lawler.

Tyron Woodley’s world came crashing down at UFC 235, though, when he sought to defend his title for the fifth time against Kamaru Usman, a rising contender. Woodley was unable to cope with Usman’s high-pressure style and wrestling prowess, and was overpowered in a five-round unanimous decision loss.

This defeat to Usman effectively set the standard for Woodley’s future opponents. Gilbert Burns and Colby Covington both used a similar combination of constant pressure and wrestling to consistently dominate the former champion.

The Burns bout concluded in a unanimous decision loss, while Woodley lost to Covington in the fifth round by TKO due to a broken rib.

In the co-main event of UFC 260, Woodley was up against Vincente Luque. Woodley saw that his opponents were taking advantage of his typical tendencies inside the cage and responded with a far more aggressive strategy.

Despite his early success, Woodley’s tactics ultimately backfired when Luque stunned him. Luque eventually locked up a D’Arce choke on the former champion, knocking him out.

Tyron Woodley was cut from the UFC after four consecutive losses. His last four losses include:

  1. Vicente Luque  (Loss 2021)

  2. Colby Covington  (Loss 2020)

  3. Gilbert Burns  (Loss 2020)

  4. Kamaru Usman  (Loss 2019)

Tyron hasn’t won a UFC fight since 2018 against Darren Till, since then he has been unable to break his losing streak. For that reason, UFC dropped him.
