Van Hunt was born on March 8, 1970, in Dayton, Ohio. He got an interest in music when he was a child. He began taking drumming lessons at the age of 7 and saxophone at the age of 8. Van also knows how to play bass, keyboards, and guitar.
Hunt’s career in music started in 1997 when he wrote and co-produced the song “Hopeless” which appeared in the soundtrack for the movie ‘Love Jones’. In 1999, he released an album titled “Love in Stereo” where he co-wrote several songs with Rahsaan Patterson including the song “Mean Sleep”.

In his peak time, he worked and toured with several artists including Mary J. Blige, Alicia Keys, Boney James, Seal, Coldplay, the Dave Matthews Band, and Kanye West.
In 2007, Van Hunt won a Grammy Award for his collaboration with John Legend and Joss Stone for their cover of the Sly & the Family Stone song “Family Affair”. The same year, he released a four-track digital EP “The Popular Machine”. A year later, he signed with Blue Note Records where his album “Popular” was shelved and would not be released until 2017.
