Simpson was born on August 8, 1985, in Raleigh, North Carolina to Evander Samuel “Sam” Simpson III and Debbie Webb Simpson. He was born as the fifth of six children.
Simpson started playing golf at Needham B. Broughton High School and then went to Wake Forest University on an Arnold Palmer Scholarship. As an amateur, he was a three-time All-American and the ACC Player of the Year in 2008. He also played on the 2007 Walker Cup team and the 2007 Palmer Cup team.
Career
Simpson turned pro in 2008 and played on the PGA Tour and Nationwide Tour. He recorded two runner-up finishes on the Nationwide Tour. He finished his first year as a pro with four top-10 finishes. However, his 2010 season was less fruitful as he managed only two top-ten finishes all season. He finished that year 94th on the money list.
Simpson’s first major championship came in June 2011 at the U.S. Open and recorded a tied 14th finish. His first PGA Tour title came at the Wyndham Championship in North Carolina. A couple of months later, he won his second tournament of the 2011 PGA Tour season at the second FedEx Cup playoff event, the Deutsche Bank Championship.
He finished the 2011 season with $6 million in prize money. Simpson also represented the United States at the 2011 Presidents Cup in Australia helping the U.S. defeat the International team, 19-15.
Webb Simpson’s best career moment came in 2012 when he won the U.S. Open at the Olympic Club in San Francisco. With his first major championship win, he moved to a career-high fifth in the Official World Golf Ranking. Due to his family issues, he decided to skip The Open Championship the following month.
In 2018, he won the Players Championship which helped him to move to number 20 in the world rankings and also $1.98 million. In February, he won the Waste Management Phoenix Open in a playoff over Tony Finau. With that win, he moved to the top 10 for the first time since 2012.
